What it is, Day after Valentine's Day, Nixon Administration tumbling down, and a raucous live rager for the ages. Oh yeah, and I'm a boomer without rants here to help in what way I can. Wouldn't it all just be a little better if we could all do that? Love, peace and respect for y'all.

My favorite period is 1968 - 1979 and then anything with Vince. I can't for the life of me figure out why the mushy organs of the 1980's just don't cut it for me. Even with all the technology available, Pigpen's organ was much clearer. Maybe Pigpen's organ was a lot fuller than most. Maybe my hearing drops off in the organ range, I started wearing earplugs to all shows in 1980.
Really Groucho55? Yeah we had it easy. Started working at 13, gas shortage, nuclear drills at school, and out of the house at 18. Oh and don't forget the ice-age coming in 10-15 years from the first Earth Day. It was the start of Fraidy-Cat Marketing, how to scare people into buying. The only tough thing these kids have is making room for all their participation awards

I don't know about you, but this show is helping me get through week 52,000 of Coronavirus lockdown. If Jerry and the boys knew that almost 50 years henceforth, the peppy teenagers they were playing to in this audience would be labeled derisively as Boomers and would be hunkering their aging, spreading a*sses indoors so as not to be seized by a dangerous little bug and have their lungs squeezed shut, why I bet they would not have changed one lick. Everybody enjoy -- and that goes for you reckless young Zoomers, too. Us old folks had it easy. xo

I try to come back every year. This was my first show. I had just turned 17. I enjoyed the reviews. Usually, I listen to a matrix version that is around somewhere. The show itself was life-changing, but the ongoing community, the recordings, the analysis...just priceless!

Subject: Reunited with a long lost friend!
Subject: Reunited with a long lost friend!
Driving up to college from NYC for the start of my freshman year in the Boston area in August, 1989, my Mom and I stopped off at a cousin's house in Providence to spend the night.
She was already off at school, so I stayed in her room and, out of curiosity, perused her cassette collection.
I was a fairly recent (but passionately deadicated) convert to the Dead nation and hadn't realized that this older cousin of mine was herself a major Dead Head.
Randomly picked out a bootleg labeled "Madison, '73" and listened to and copied it that night.
I think it was the first time I ever heard They Love Each Other.
From there to Dark Star --> Eyes and I was a total goner.
This quickly became one of my closest companions alongside Barton Hall '77 (my very first bootleg) in my small but high-quality (that's music quality, not sound quality) collection.
Anyway, a year later I dropped out of college to study Talmud in yeshiva over seas and I put away my Dead collection for about a decade and a half.
Fast forward another 10 years or so and I'm an occasional visitor here to get a fix every now and then.
Never did find my old Madison '73 again and with shows today labeled by venue name had no idea how to reconnect to that old friend from long ago.
Opened up Archive this morning and randomly selected this one to keep me company over a leisurely breakfast.
Was enjoying the groove but not paying particularly close attention...until, that is, we started to enter the Phil Zone at about the 16:00 mark in Dark Star.
At 17:00 (and then Jerry's re-entrance at 18:30) that sound is so uniquely melodic I knew I had finally found it!
With a deep listening to Eyes I was in love all over again.
Welcome home buddy!
Where've you been? I've been missing you!

Subject: I thought it sounded familiar
listening to this I discovered some songs were very familiar. I knew I had this somewhere. After looking through the digital catalog and CD' etc., I then looked at my cassettes. I found what was labeled set 2 but...
Side A is:
Dark Star
Eyes of the World
China Doll
side B is:
Here comes sunshine
You ain't woman enough
Loose Lucy
Ten. Jed
Box of Rain
Row Jimmy
Jack Straw
They chose what they thought was good and fit it together on two 45 minute sides. I've had it for about 35 years. That Dark Star < Eyes was so very familiar it was great!

Anyway, just realizing yet again how much i dig this band --What a killer China>Rider!

What I notice the most on these reviews is the negativity and ego trips. Can you all just relax and enjoy the music and perhaps just be Grateful that someone was Genius enough to catalog all this?
Aside from the comments about how awesome Charlie Millers transfers are and people pointing out stellar versions I find most of the comments annoying, but then I and you are free to read or not read. Just chill and enjoy!

Is it really the business of any of us (including people at the archive) to determine what should or should not be the "spirit" of what is discussed in essentially a forum for expressing opinions? What do you mean, go "back" to it? If there ever was a "spirit" that we all agreed upon, I didn't get the memo.
I think you are actually making a threat of violence here. "Talk nice, or we'll take your forum away!"? Many of us use the review section as a way of determining which shows we like for the purpose of downloading, and this is an established use that has nothing to do with your expectations...and so I can't really have a problem with someone also reviewing the reviews of others. What is wrong with this, other than that it might not be what you intended?

Subject: The review sections lately
Subject: The review sections lately
I know that this post completely does exactly what it's addressing, but I notice a lot of people writing reviews about what other people write reviews about. The review section really pops out at you on this website, so I think that it's easy to become focused on it, and the review section is starting to lose the spirit of what it's meant for because of the focus on it. It's probably not something that's on the top of archive.org's list of things to change, but this is just a shout out and suggestion for us that we bring back the purpose of the review section and put the value back on writing solid reviews specifically about the performance, production quality, or anything at all that isn't bickering between reviews or making generalized statements about the other reviews written here. This review probably seemed a little cunty... and technically hypocritical. But I am willing to wager that you, like me, would love to read a review section with more reviews on the music and upload than reviews on reviews.

To those of you that have Apple phones you are in luck! Download the Relisten app and they have as many shows on it as this archive does and you can download them at home on wifi and its saved on your phone so when you listen to it later you dont use data. Also download Grateful Dead Radio. Its Grateful Dead internet radio 24 hours a day. It uses data but somehow its less then Pandora even uses. i listened to it 8 hours straight and it used .200 of a gig of data. also whats cool is they play on there Old and in the way stuff, the jerry garcia band, phil and friends, stuff off of band members solo albums like Weir's Ace. Enjoy and be Grateful!

I began collecting tapes in 1970. Have many hours. Some of them are such crappy sound all of you experts would cring.
I have listened though many, hiss, clapping, people fighting in the back ground. But you know what it did not matter. If you could feel it you could block out all the distractions. Jerry was like that. I am so proud to feel I know these crazy ass gentleman called the Grateful Dead. but of course I did'nt I spent so much time with I got to know what they would play nest. Jerry will always give it up.
So thank you boys and do what ever you want and live a good life. That is what they taught me.
So there!

Hey man Ive been long on the road to man, but for those of the younger genaration getting turned on to the dead that dont have hundreds of dead shows like you (which is why u arent whining) theyd also like to be able to listen in there car or home stereo! Its not greed doushe Jerry said once he played the music in concert he was done with it and it should be free for everyone so chill. WWJD (thats "What Would Jerry Do") BTW this site wasnt made for streaming it was made for downloading genius, so know what youre talking about before you go stupid I for one am stoked there is an ever growing young deadbase that cares enough to speak out against what new dead management and Phil have decided.

Can you people stop acting so spoiled and childish? I see people complaining because they cannot download. So what? Grow up - let's enjoy the fact we have this wonderul archive to enjoy all this fantastic music for free. This site is for STREAMING people - period. Why all the greed? I have 2000 hours of cassettes been trading since 1981, you don;t see me whining do you? I risked my life on the road for these guys and saw 92 shows, most in '84-'86, do you see me complaining? Of course not, we enjoy what we have. Why can't you people enjoy it for what is designed for instead of - like Bill Graham says on 4.29.71 - being spoiled little ---- all the time and always wanting more, more, more. The Dead were not about that folks -the Dead were about enjoying what we have. So please - let;s stop the complaints, use the site as it is designed, and keep the comments positive before someone takes this awesome site away from us. If you feel you must download then you have horrible internet access, a lame cell phone, are technically challenged and need serious training, or all of the above. I can naccess this site anytime anywhere and stream away and enjoy it, and everyone else can to if they just get the training, its very basic for the 21st century.
Great Eyes, its stunning how well they played that song even in its infant stages. HCS a little rougher but still very enjoyable. I recommend streaming this show.

I once met a guy at a bar in Wyoming who was from Vermont and he told me that one of the things that he missed the most was driving around during the fall foliage season listening to this show, and particularly the eyes.
I moved to Madison Wisconsin in 1997 and put this show in the tape deck as I rolled into that town for the first time in my life. I didn't know a soul there. But with Here Comes Sunshine playing, I looked to the left and saw the Dane County Coliseum right there outside my window. I knew everything was going to work out just fine.

Its hard to imagine people listening to this and writing on anything other than the show or the music at hand. I think the Dark star > Eyes portion is one of the freest, jazziest, and inspiring sounding jams I have ever heard; however what is so spectacular, to me anyway, is the precision and utmost musicianship that each and every song holds.

The GRATEFUL DEAD "Live On Stage" February 15, 1973 at the Dane County Coliseum, Madison, WI. I found this by accident. There with my friends trippin and wasted. The first time we heard the Dead do ElPaso. My favorite Marty Robins song, Before the dead ever cane along. Had always wanted for them to do it, what a freakout, doin it live just for me. How did I ever forget this show? Cruzin the Archive and there it was. What a flashback. Thank you who ever put it on. Back then a rock of hash or a bag of smoke really was 5 bucks, a nickle bag. This recording just isn't the same as being there, but when I listen, I am there all over again. Flyin high, never a trouble, so much has happened since. I never thought I would live that long. Sweet.

This show has been circulating since I can remember. It is one of those shows that all of us played to death. It is what it is... Some shows back then just sounded like that on tape. It is also one of those cherished shows in the history of the GD. Especially in 1973, a favorite year for many! They all can't sound like late '80's and '90's shows.

This is the 1st show I listened to from the site. I chose this show because it was the most listened to. Then while listening I realized it was the same date as the day I was listening. The world is full of coincidences. Anyway, the piano sounds great on Eyes, and I've never heard the cool Phill-er before. Good fun.

I dl'ed this one cause it was the most downloaded show so far on archive and its 1973. man, i was not dissapointed. this is easily one of the best shows of '73 if not the best. of course the DS>Eyes>China Doll is the main attraction, but what i love also is how well all the little "filler" tunes are played too. China>Rider is hot hot hot! my favorite ever. Bertha, EL Paso, Big River, TLEO, UJB, and ESPECIALLY HCS all sick as hell and very energetic.

I have to agree with "Deadhead Reverend" when he said that the "engineers" - for lack of a more polite word - were fiddling all concert long with the levels and never seemed to "get it right". This concert is a good one by the GD, but what we have here on the Internet Archive is a little hard to fathom... the levels are all over the place! Maybe they were NOT real engineers, i.e., "wannabes".

This concert has very poor sound mix quality. Engineers must have been fiddling with getting the controls right throughout, but I'm not sure they made it. Clearly, they were not ready when the concert started. A shame.

Hey,
Having a grate time listening to this Here Comes Sunshine! It goes out into outer space and gets stuck on a ring on Saturn and can't get off. Try to contemplate these lyrics:
Wake of the flood, laughing water, forty-nine,
Get out the pans, don't just stand there dreamin'
Get out of the way, get out of the way,
Here comes sunshine, here comes sunshine.
Line up a long shot maybe try it two times, maybe more,
Good to know you got shoes to wear when you find the floor,
Why hold out for more?
Here comes sunshine, here comes sunshine.
Askin' you nice, now, keep the mother rollin'
One more time, been down before,
You just don't have to go no more, no more.
Here comes sunshine, here comes sunshine.
Here are a few more thoughts I have while listening to this song:
I feel like I'm caught on the ripple of a pond from a freshly thrown stone... up and down I go with reverberations and echoes ringing in my head until what I thought was infinity is casually reunited with the present reality.
You have to listen in the right frame of mind and analyze the consciousness/madness.
Dark Star is inventive and unanticipated. I think it is largely due to Billy or Mickey's rat-a-tat-tat on the symbols. Ting-tang-ting they ring. And then Phil took it along a journey through the woods up and down winding paths (Even made me get up and move closer to the other "phil side" speaker).
Like sliding down the back of a penguin...
The "Eyes of the World" seems like it collapses. A bunch of people standing around a sink whole saying, "Where did the the sound go?" and then, as it begins to swirl like quicksand in an hour glass, it erupts out into a volcanic jam with smooth veins of hot lava meandering down the mountain into a pool which is called, "China Doll." Lava is funny. you can see it coming a mile away. It moves quite slowly. But as it burns and keeps away the yearning of such turning away. The China Doll could be felt through the whole jam! It wails like a calling from a far away stable... calling the horses home. Consider the following lines:
"All I leave behind me is only what I found"
and
"Take up your china doll, take up your china doll,
it's only fractured and just a little nervous from the fall."
With the coolest, cool down... My darlin' Sugaree! Just don't tell them that you know of me.

First of all, this is one of my all time favorites to listen to. I remember back in the late 80's listening to the DS-> Eyes over and over again. I would get in my car on the way to work and rewind the tape, and listen to this segment, then repeat on the way home.
My issue is that this show appears to only be able to be streamed, not downloaded, yet I see references to "I downloaded this show..." in other reviews. Can anyone share with me how I can get a digital copy of this show, it doesn't appear that I can through Archive.org!
Any help is appreciated.

Subject: First There Was A Rider Then There Was No Rider Then There Was
It took me a while to find it but I knew Jerry must have thought of it at some point.
There's a band I played in for a while years ago and we used to have a lot of fun with the jam between China and Rider. Yes, the usual UJB tweak to be sure but one day outta no-where we took it way way down and slurried it around a bit and out spooged Mountain Jam ala Allmans based on the old Donovan song. It became a best loved spacey love sluice in the middle of China-Rider and oft times prompted an Über snurfish Rider out the back end.
"WHY IS HE WRITING THIS LOAD OF SPEW!?!?"
Well, kids, check out this tiny little noodle Jerry drops in just before the first verse of Rider. Mountain Jam to be sure. The way it's phrased, it has the feel of something he literally stumbled upon and then seems to have quickly had the thought, "Hmm, think I save that for later".
I don't fer sure know if they ever opted to develop that into anything, but for a tiny moment, there it was.
Great minds DO think alike. {:>)
When in doubt, tune up.

Subject: Great show, sound not that good though
I'd definitely give this a 5+ star rating based soley on the band's performance. It's strong and the show is long. Check out the Eyes Of The World, it's completely off the hook. However the recording has some noticable volume fluctuations, two cut songs and often the sound is kinda grainy. Everything is audible but clarity is lost due to what I can only describe as a grimy/gritty element to the sound. It's not clipping, just not clear. But don't let that stop you from streaming this wonderful show, it's absolutely worth hearing and the sound issues aren't that bad. 1973 seems to get short shrift or doesn't get praised enough and I don't know why. Maybe because '72 was so completely innovative and '74 was so stellar in the jam department? Well 1973 was kind of a transitional year but even an average show from '73 is wonderful and this show is above average. I was just beginning to explore the '73 stuff when Archive changed their policy about downloads, this is one of the few shows I got:-( I wish there was some way to convince the Dead that downloading is a good thing. I also noticed that the incredible 11/17/73 Pauley Pavillion show is completely gone, is it going to be commercially released? It should be.

I downloaded this show after all of the rave reviews and I hate to disagree BUT...look, there is no question that the playing is phenomenal. My problem is that there is absolutely no clarity on the high-end and overall the mix is kinda muddy. It's actually frustrating because you can tell the band was on it's "A" game. Due to quality issues I have to rate this show as only average. Enjoyable? Yes. Would I listen to it again? Probably not.

This in one amazing show. I'm not an audiophile, or whatever, and I'm not going to knock anyone who is. Whatever floats your boat I say. The sound quality is amazing, but for all the gains in sound, I still like to part of the show, as good as the sound is a high quailty audience recording of this show would complete what is an excellent show.

Its february 15th, 2008. 35 years ago tonite, to the day the Dead played at the Coliseum in Madison, WI. Wow! This was one of the first bootlegs I ever had, I still have it on a cassette. I love it :) Jerry's riffs on El Paso are truly interstellar, the Here Comes Sunshine Jam is the best I've ever had the privilege of being turned on to :) The Darkstar-->Eyes-->China Doll is simply amazing!!! I remember playing hackey-sack when I was in college and putting this tape in the box. One of the guys asked me, "Are there any words (lyrics) on this tape?" he he, he just wasn't getting the point...
The famous American Prophet, Edgar Cayce, said once, in one of his trances, that every thought ever thought in the history of the universe is recorded in the universal mind. I am looking forward to finding out what Jerry was thinking about during the hyper-drive jam in Darkstar from this show. Whatever it was, something tells me it was most likely very cool!

Great show and set list.Even a second set Sugaree!Amazing how Kreutzman carried this band through this period on his lonesome with what seemed at the time to be pretty much an ordinary kit.Hence his nickname Fairplay!

Drove up from Beloit. We were about 15 feet back on the floor of the ice rink. I remember that Box of Rain emerged from a jam Phil started solo as the rest of the band was off stage. This was the first time I heard them perform Eyes of the World. After this show, we followed them to University of Illinois which is where I met the woman who was to become my first wife and the mother of my two sons.

Excellent show, above average quality recording. Either I'm more stoned than usual, but Bob's guitar cuts through the mix nicely and it's a good thing, because he was on fire (see TLEO and Eyes for proof)...the whole mix and placement of instruments is top notch.
Look out for:
An intense China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider jam
They Love Each Other (the way it was meant to be played...fast and happy!)
A toe-tapping Big River
A facemelting Dark Star...("I woke up this morning and my head was not intact...I asked my friends about it, tried to find out where it's at..." I know that's TOO, but it's an apt description)...featuring a tasteeeee Phil solo, which leads into...
Just about one of the finest Eyes of the World that I've ever heard...the intro jam alone must last about five minutes...Whee! At one point it verges on spacing out, but settles into a more lighthearted jam. I'm waiting to see if it transmogrifies into that Slipknot style riff...aw yeah, Phil's bringing it on...the other guys needed quite few bars to get the hint!

a big one indeed. the set list goes on and on...and on and on. however I think there are better bits and pieces out there for '73. overall -- fantastic as most this stuff is we listen to. that said, I dropped a bit when the song cut off on my favorite cowboy tune -- big river. after that though, the darkstar > eyes > china doll is flawless and groooovy.

with Chris U; he nailed it: this show is all about TLEO-->DS-->EYES-->CD.
(Also a strong Here comes Sunshine).
They Love Each Other is the strongest version I have heard.
I had this tape in my car's deck for an entire summer back in the 80's without removing it.
This show that good.

Subject: Early 70's Dead....
Early 70's dead especially right before the tour of 74 was so to speak the very end of what some might consider a whole different entity entirely. The band still killed 85% of the shows and actually benefited from the pure Peruvian heaven that they so readily enjoyed. The songs were on pace and despite the expected lyrical errors of Jerry (one might worry if he didn’t screw up a word or two), the shows where full of energy while still embracing their Americana roots. This one is no different. So limpbiskit fan, instead of commenting on the ridiculous name.... never mind, the point is that in the 80's they hit gold on maybe 30%, at best, of the shows every yearly tour. I would gladly take a decent earlier show than an 80's show any day. The China Rider is awesome and the Dark->Eyes is pretty fucking mind blowing.
Sincerely,
Jerry’s lyrical adroitness

This was one of the first 20 or 30 tapes I ever dubbed and I heard it first when I was a student at UW-Madison. It blew my mind.
As anyone who has heard this show will tell you, it all boils down to a few things: SUNSHINE, LOVE EACH OTHER, and DS->EYES->CHINA DOLL. If those were the only songs ever heard from this concert, this show would have at least the reputation it already has, if not more.
At lest two of the next best bets from '73 have already been picked by Dick (god bless the man for eternity) and the remaining grails are from later in the Summer: namely the PNE show and selections from the immediately following 6-24-73 Portland Memorial Coliseum show, i.e., the first 15 or so minutes from the Dark Star which is basically the Dane County show on the purest blow you could ever hope to schnort).
Anyway .... "Love Scene" ... this is the ONLY bass solo that matters and the question for Phil is ... how did it feel?? From my perspective, it's the gigantic orgasm of all time ...

I'm a little confused about limp's review here. 73 the worst year? please, it's one of the hottest bar none. and this show is so smoking it's ridiculous. this was probably one of the first tapes i ever had when i wad growing up and i couldn't be anymore satisfied with that. the playin' in the first set is long and drawn as a playin' should be, and tight songs like bertha, promised, and TLEO are superb!!
of course, the tour-de-force is the dark star>phil solo>eyes>china doll. this continues to send chills up my spine every time i listen to it, which is way too often by the way.
a must have for head

I don't usually listen to the streaming shows, as I have seven-and-a-third kids and the only place I ever get to hear music is in the car. But tonight I'm working late in an empty office, I'm about halfway through this show, and I'm just gobsmacked at the quality! The vocals are on the money, and with more feeling than I've heard in years. This is what Dead legs are meant to be, and too seldom are.
It almost (but not quite) makes me want to work late more often.

immaculate grateful dead music. this is not a great recording, but immensely enjoyable in any form because of an incredible exhibition of confidence on the part of the band which makes for an all time keeper performance. this is balls out 1973 progressive rock. I had attended the Maples show a week prior and that was a rock fest.
The version of HC Sunshine is so over the top, far ranging yet but gathering in, it would be hard to discern the album cut over it, but because of its intendant jam it just goes into the exact areas we never thought possible. Thereby, the unexpected frees the soul.
As I am listening to Dark Star, outside my window, municipal fireworks go off adding their flash into the conflagration of a tepid evening sky. The finishing touch is a decapitating Phil solo that leads into a hint of the same chording that graces HC Sunshine/Midnight Hour and floods the night with Eyes.
When by 1977 they would have quickly ended with a few more songs, the Dead pile-drive right into almost like a third set without taking a break. And every square or round inch of it is impeccably played while holding onto the muse's hand of forthright, yet gracious, improv.
A jammed-to-the-max Eyes lends itself to Mind Left
and cascading down Everest finely links back up with the trail and into China Doll. This version acts as a bit of a rest period for the three guitarists. And then they kick royal ass throughout the rest of the show.
I tell ya, for a Fourth of July, this was all the fireworks I needed. This is a 5 star performance. I had to downgrade the overall rating because the sound is not quite up to snuff, but it is passable

Bob's vocals sound tinny, Jerry's sound very clear. There are some abrupt edits at song ends in set 1. Other than those faint complaints, the playing is superb, nice instrument mix. Jerry's vocals are at their peak- as witnessed by Loose Lucy, Chinacat, Tennessee Jed, Here Comes Sunshine and They Love Each Other. This is before I have even heard the Dark Star>Eyes combo. An exquisite performance, that must rank among the best of the year. No flubs, top-notch sound, and a dreamy set list.
Almost every tune is a highlight, but pay attention to the following: "Box" for the band's fab harmony, "China>Rider's" passion, "Playin's" deep improvised journey, "You Ain't Woman Enough" (go Donna, for a change!), "TLEO's" funky bopping melody, and the entire "Dark Star>Eyes>China Doll" sequence for it's rich and varying soundscapes catapulted by Phil's bass solo that bridges "Star" and "Eyes."
This is an excellent example of why we love this band.

I just love this show! I am listening to Donna tearing into Loretta Lynn's YOU AINT WOMAN ENOUGH,
I dig all the harmonizing vocals, Phil singing!
My first show was JGB summer 84 in some tiny gym in upstate N.Y.(Right in front of Jerry for DEAL)
I went thru the whole mega DEAD thing during the 80's, but you know what Brothers and Sisters compared to all the crap that came out of that era from the world of MTV, I am so thankful "I was making love in a world time forgot"
If they get the time machine perfected before i kick .I am time travelin with a dead base in my hand.(And this would so be one of my first stops)
It just amazes me listening to the band , Wisconsin in February, spend all night keeping warm with the band. That's living!
DARK STAR>EYES>CHINA DOLL was a whole side of tape
back in the day. I could put this in the player and forget everything and just float on the music.
I am so glad to find this site and here this show again!I am somewhere deep into DARK STAR now, have not even heard any vocals yet, too sweet! Oh here it comes, Jerry is inside my head now...Those we love never die...transcending space and time!Theres a great mellow I think Phil led jam right now, I am pretty sure thats bass! It is lighting the heads up for sure, here comes Jerry, wasn't that Here Comes Sunshine sweet, oh yeah and now this very large EYES OF THE WORLD WHICH I HAVE NOT HEARD IN A VERY LONG TIME. "The night comes so quiet and it is close on the heels of the day" Keith banging the ivory is just peachy! I have no recollection how they turn this towards China Doll, I remember them doing three song Jerry combo's when Bruce played in the very early 90's but this is a whole different animal in 1973, it's
amazing that Bill is back there on his own, they must have had to bolt him too the floor at times but this is not spinal tap, sorry i digress, Jerry
reving up the engine, band in hot pursuit! notes coming quicker now, leveling off, Stronger than dirt, early Slipknot feel this is going way out and A PISTOL SHOT...

Man I love this Here Comes Sunshine! My all time favorite Sunshine has been 11/30/73 since the Dick's Picks 14 release. But here a slightly wilder side appears. Jerrys playing at about 4:20 into the song, fuckin awesome! As far as Donna goes, I am both a lover and a hater, guess it depends on if she sounds like shit or not.
Good sound quality, Great show, Gotta love a snappy Love Eachother. Five across the board.

Not that anyone needs any more convincing that this show is amazing, but if you're a keith fan, this show is great. he's not overpresent in the mix, but the intro to bertha and his playing in tleo is sick. the rest of the concert is amazing, too. I was never a fan of Here Comes Sunshine before this, but now i get it.

This is a Killer Show. It combines a mellowness and creativity that was only present in these '73 shows. The playlist is outstnding , the music devistating and the sound great(especially considering how long ago this was recorded) Two cut songs are present (casey jones and one more saturday night) but come at the end of sets and do not take away from the recording

This show was pretty bang on. They love each other was too cool for me to sit still. What a fun groove! (are there any other shows where they play it like that?) Definitely early vocals, but they seem to be having a lot of fun, so its okay. A lot of songs that didn't last long on the set lists here. Probably call this a 'recommended listening' caliber performance.

That "missing time" that alien abductees talk about? I just had that during the Dark Star. The next thing I remember is that it had rolled into a rollicking Eyes of the World...Wow. 1973 (my birth year too btw!) is becoming my favorite year of the Dead. The China Doll here is exquisite. I really love Keith's playing on this one. The Eyes is really funky and fierce at times. I dig it.

I have a tape everything after HCS, but the order had to be ammended because of the length of the DS>EYES>CHINA DOLL, which was all of side 2, with the other songs making up side 1. It's great to be able to hear the 1st set though. The DARK STAR has to be in my top 3 DS's ever. I can still remember being BLOWN AWAY listening to this show for the 1st time. Some have said that the early Eyes post-lyrics-jams weren't all that great---I BEG TO DIFFER!!! While it does seem a little subdued when compared to what the jam morphed into, it seems to fit just perfectly in the context of the show & the seque it is part of.
I've also wanted to know what the loud "POP" is about 2/3 of the way through Dark Star. On my tape it was a little clearer-sounding that what's on this recording. Anyway, this show is in my top 5 of all time. Remember though, we all hear things just a little differently---it's ALL in how the music makes YOU feel.

The much-acclaimed solo between Dark Star and Eyes of the World reminds me a lot of the song that Jerry did for the love scene in the movie Zabriskie Point, which came out in 1970. That's one of my favorite songs in any category, so it was pretty cool to hear in this show, even just partially.

Actually, your instincts were right on, as The Wheel appeared on Garcia's first solo album, recorded in 1971. It's not unusual to hear familier phrases of music in Dark Star jams, it seems a place they go to work things out.
The Dark Star into Eyes transition, with phil leading the way is classic. One of the best ever.

That jam that Phil goes on between Dark Star and Eyes of the World, and then Bob and Jerry come in and start improvising, when I first heard this tape I thought that they were teasing "The Wheel." But of course The Wheel wouldn't be written for another few years. Incredible spontenous genius at that moment. Not to put down any other section of this classic show, but that "moment" really makes the show for me.

I got the .shn of this board just before that deal went down as an upgrade for one of the earliest shows I got, which I wore out in my youth. I agree the overall mix is fantastic, though the VBR sounds a bit less clean to my ear (A- maybe).
The highlights are many, including a great TLEO (they should've kept the bridge and not slowed it down, I feel these early '73 versions are the better arrangement), some of Jerry's best chicken pickin' in Big River, an afore-mentioned killer Bertha, my 2nd favorite Here Comes Sunshine (just edged out by DP#1), a nice China>Rider, and of course the dreamy, jazzy Dark Star>Eyes>China Doll centerpiece. A word about the Eyes: Yeah, it's not fully developed, and they don't flow through the outro changes as well as in subsequent years, but the spacey, almost meandering quality of this Eyes jam is a PERFECT compliment to both the spartan 'Star before it, and the delicate China Doll after it. Listen with an open mind, and try not to compare to some of the obviously tighter Eyes.
'73 is my personal favorite year for the boys, you've got that great '72 intensity and edge, a bunch of new (soon to be classic) songs that haven't become old for them yet, and the first glimpse of the more improvisationally tight '74 style.
A+ performance, A/A- quality

Sounds Great on my end, also really valualbe to read other peoples thoughts. The Dark Star>Eyes>CHina is out of this world, most writing's sets the 2/9/73 Eyes apart from all followong as exporitory and unfinalized in the exit jam, But i feel this version fits into that mold as well, still fresh and wide open. The cuts in Casey and SatNight are a shame but are minor, and certianly in the right places if you catch my drift.

Definitely a highlight from the fertile year of '73. 2nd show of the year, and the band is already in top form. Dark Star>Eyes>China is one of their finest sequences from any year.
Although 2/9/73 may have more notoriety, this show is a better performance. The 2nd Eyes ever, and it's already fully formed and realized.
This is a show screaming for a Dick's Pick's or Download Series. If you don't have it, enjoy this high quality stream.

It is a crime that great shows like this one are no longer available for free download. Making the shows available in streaming format was a good shot toward trying to compromise, but there is still one huge problem. What becomes of those of us with dial-up who can't stream music without it stopping every 10 seconds or so to buffer? We just get left out in the cold while others continue to enjoy this incredible music.

This must be one of my top ten because after having it on cassette for well over 20 years I keep going back to it. Tleo is just infectious. Sunshine is so on and Jerry really gets the pistons popping with the rythem strokes towards the end of the song. Star>Eyes. Phil's bass solo is an alltime highlight. I can live without Donna's Loretta Lynne cover however it's better than anything else she ever sang with the boys. She still makes me cringe. That said it can't dampen this Fantastic show. Great set list, great musicianship, I always liked the recording. Now.. post everything back up for download and let the lawsuits fly where they may. I think we win this one hands down GDL can't put the genie back in the bottle after 30+ years. At the rate they release and the prices they charge I can't live long enough or earn enough money to turn people on to this incredible music. The shame continues.

This was one my first bootlegs and I played the heck of it. In high school (Loyola Academy, Wilmette, IL) we could play music in art class and I was the only person who ever brought a tape deck. Amazingly nobody really complained about listening to the dead every single day all semester. Anyway the show rocks. To think this was thhe second time they played Eyes is pretty impressive. If I could only take 3 73 shows with me, this, 11-11, and 12-12 would be it. Yes, even above the RFK and Kezar shows. All of my favorites feature excellent Eyes, but this one--the second one played--has been one of my favorites for nearly 20 years. Starts off with a great Phil solo out of Dark Star, and just a sublime, relaxed intro into Eyes--it's picks up steam like an old steam engine. Complete with the harmonics concurrent with the end of Phil's solo, it will blow you away.
Jerry's solos would not get this back to this level until the fall, imho. The exit jam is equally compelling, and lengthy, and falls perfectly into China Doll. Add to that a crushing HC Sunshine, a wonderfully long PITB in the first set, and some stellar versions of Bertha, Big River, Jed, Straw, and China>Rider (this was one of the last pre-retirement China>Riders without the little UJB-like riff before Rider), and incredible sound quality...well, why haven't you downloaded it yet??

band definitely seems to be having fun...especially during the "woo's" in loose lucy...but i couldn't crank this super loud in my good yamaha speakers...voices and high end just seemed way to high....had to turn treble way down..now i'm thinking about buying an eq...anyways...lucy great...nice way to open show...big river was good too....and just a really nice transition into eyes....overall a good sounding show...can hear all instruments pretty well...watch out for the cuts on casey jones and sat nite....peace...back to revise revise review...still listening...now i can crank this up no prob...i'm at sugaree...something on my copy happens to the quality in the first few songs...it does get better...good luck

Probably my favorite Here Comes Sunshine, fantastic sound quality, the band is tight and fluid the whole show, Donna doesnt even sound half bad this time. Excellent show, i reccomend it to anyone who loves The Dead.

I was actually born the day before this concert, but I still hold it close to my heart! A great but somewhat mellow Dark Star leads into an excellent solo from Phil. Jerry eventually joins them for a short duet, at the end of which, you hear Phil laying down the groove for Eyes Of The World. It sounds like Phil calling the song (whereas it'd usually be Jerry). I think this was the second (or third?) Eyes, and it already sounds classic. China Doll here is brilliant as well.
And for once, Donna doesn't sound all that bad paying homage to Loretta Lynn.

Just to add to all the accolades, I must say the sound quality of this show is absolutely stunning! Warm sound with no one instrument too high or low in the mix, and a little aud sound through the stage mics. Next best thing to being there - highly recommended!

This is a great show top to bottom. What a great early Feb. show of the great year of 73'- wall of sound!- L. Lucy opener, BIODTL, Casey, H.C. Sunshine all are wonderful. I love Donna singing You aint Women Enough--one of the better songs she sings with the Dead. Set 2 is kick ass- had it on tape 12 years ago or so and always enjoyed it then- glad to see again thanks Archive.org- Dark Star>Eyes>C. Doll!!! wow- get this show it hasa nice setlist, good sound and the dead were having fun in 73 as the sound was changing from the early 70's- great all the way around.

Broken heart don't feel so bad...especially when you've got Jerry singing to you. Transitional year & show - in terms of material, PA and feel. Very good sound quality.

Subject: top 5!
Well 1973 is a year where it's almost impossible to pick a top 5, even a top 10. But this show just shines!Only the 2nd show of the year, and when it's this good, you know the rest of the year is gonna be special-it was! A "greatest hits" first set that pleases everyone. And the 2nd Set opener HC Sunshine may be the best ever- Jerry wails! The Dark Star is one of the best for 1973- very jazzy and mellow, with a magical transition into Eyes. Phil also is beginning to come into his own now as a soloist, as you'll hear. One of the first monster Phil shows of 1973. An auspicious portend of the year's musical heights that lay ahead. Plus Uncle John's Band for an encore? Get outta here!

This show is what started me listening to the Dead. My stepsister gave this to me as one of the first generation tapes to start my collection..except only the first set could fit on the tape. If only I knew how great of a show this was to start my "trip" with the dead. Im stoked about hearing the rest. I recommend this show to anyone and thank whoever posted it.

grading purely on sound quality, I give this show 4 stars. Just a little hiss and not enough analog warmth to be 5 stars. Perhaps the azuimuth was not dead on or something during the transfer.

I got these DATs from Dougal about 3-3.5 years ago. I had mentioned on some other group that I was trying to find the best possible copy of this show to vine to the masses. I got a private email telling me to send two 60m DATs and I'd be hooked up. Well when I got the DATs and saw the lineage written on the cases I about flipped ! So I set to mastering these on CD. the mastering was as follows:
Panasonic sv-3700 > Cool Edit Pro via SPDIF > CD Wave > CD/SHN
and I sent a copy of this off to Mike Hall to be vined and the rest is history - that's the story of how this show came to me and then on into public circulation.
What a wonderful show and what a treat to be able to sit here and stream the show....
Thanks Dougal !
enjoy!

as exciting as the acquisition of a show are peoples stories of their experiences with the show and the Archive will become a place to read how the Dead's music affects people. Very cool

The strange Phil solo that links Dark Star and Eyes is one of my favorite moments in Dead history. So minimalistic; so sublime.
Rest of the show is no slouch either. One of the standouts in a standout year.
